    Movie Suggestions for The Holidays

A lifelong friend of mine, Robby Valadez, is an avid fan of classic movies. He can instantaneously fall into character and quote the best and most memorable lines. With cooler weather approaching, there’s nothing better than pouring a glass of wine, curling up in a blanket and watching a great movie.

    Here are his top suggestions:
    Sunset Boulevard
    Auntie Mame, Rosalind Russell version
    All About Eve
Imitation of Life, with Lana Turner
    Giant
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
    Butterfield 8
    The Women, original version
    Jezebel
    Rebecca, with Joan Fontaine

    An Old Fashioned Taste Off

I’ve started to enjoy the taste of an Old Fashioned. While never a whisky or bourbon drinker, I suddenly find myself really liking the taste of them. So I thought it would be fun to go out for a taste comparison. I grabbed a buddy and headed to two of Austin’s hot spots, LaV and Lonesome Dove. LaV won hands down on presentation and taste. The solid ice ball helped cool the cocktail, but didn’t water it down. The Lonesome Dove version was very cold, but the cubed and broken ice melted and diluted the drink too much. Both were equal on price point, just slightly shy of $13.00 each. LaV’s bartender chose his favorite Rye and the Lonesome Dove bartender took our request for Bulleit.

It was a fun way to hit a couple of local hot spots and have an interesting time doing it.

11/1 Update: Eddie V’s makes a nice Old Fashioned as well, Ask for Gary in the bar. He knows what he’s doing.

2015 F1 Washout. Mud and Mechanics.

Turn off traction control and slip on your rubber boots because you’ll need some tenacity to traverse the COTA parking lots and grounds. It was a mess! Pacific hurricanes rarely effect Texas weather, but this year is the exception. Torrential rain is forecast for Saturday and if Friday was any indicator, the crowd might need to bring a life boat.

The parking lots are all but marshlands and bayous. The mud is like quicksand for ties. My poor little ATS almost had to be rescued, but some quick thinking got it out of the mud and back on the side-road.

So after braving the elements and arriving at our SkyBox, we walked into a huge mess! Garbage was strewn throughout the floor, tables and chairs were overturned and water was everywhere. Because of the storms, the food had been taken away, the vendors had closed their doors, and the crowd had all but disappeared. When the storms finally passed, the track actually dried out a little. It was dry enough for the Porsche qualifying race and the original F1 cars to get out on the track. It was fun to watch, but under less than ideal circumstances.

Unfortunately, bad planning added to the mess. When I went to purchase some food (since the box food was gone), I was told that the kitchen {Thirty Four Chophouse} was out of chicken fingers (after I paid for them). How do you run out of chicken fingers when you’ve  supposedly prepped for a huge crowd? I’m still scratching my head on that one. They tried to save face by offering two hot dogs as an accommodation. Hardly comparable, but a noble offer nonetheless. Since I was cold, wet, and hungry, I took the bait.

Without the crowds, hustle, and fanfare, the event seemed lifeless. The rain will continue, so F1 2015 will likely be a wash out. It is unfortunate, but that’s just Texas weather for you.

  • Fredericksburg Revisited

I had the opportunity to attend a grand birthday party in Fredericksburg and the adventure never let up. The weekend included everything from fabulous dining, to great shopping finds, to gorgeous architecture and landscapes, and a lot of fine wine time. Here are a few of my favorites from the weekend.

Dogologie was one of the most curious pet stores I’ve visited. The inventory range was extraordinary. Best thing…  You can go online and shop!

The art galleries! Be sure to wander down the side streets of Fredericksburg anytime you;re there. I was quite surprised at the quality of goods on the side streets. I was completely unaware of all the art the city had to offer.

Kitschy clothing: there was a lot of country-themed stuff in Fredericksburg, but there was also a lot of nice clothing and housewares. While the shabby chic look was in full force, one can still find purchase worthy goods.

Last but not least, Vaudeville. One place you simply must visit. Spectacular! Food, drink, shopping… all under one umbrella.

  • Stella San Jac is Stellar. Featuring the Best Biscuit Ever!

Hotel restaurants in Austin have really upped the ante in recent years. Many of this city’s finest restaurants reside in hotels. The new downtown Westin Hotel does not disappoint with the dining experience offered at Stella San Jac. What a treat both aesthetically and culinarily. I’ve dined at the establishment twice, once for an office luncheon and a second time for an intimate breakfast. Both meals were splendid.

My lunch was the Avocado Salad. It was served in a chilled bowl, the greens were super cold, but not frozen or wilted from chilling, and the fried avocado; perfect. What’s lunch without some spirits? They bar had ample beers to choose from and they, too, were served ice-cold.

My breakfast experience was just as pleasing with quick seating, service and food delivery. I thought the prices were agreeable and the food delicious. I had the banana pancakes which were served with candied tangerines. They blew me away! At first I was a bit miffed at a $5.00 tea, but the offer of a to-go glass made that all the more palatable.

It won’t be my last time to dine with them. I absolutely loved it.

Treat yourself to the 3 for $5 #16 biscuits. Bacon drippings, flaky crust, topped with sea salt. Pure ecstasy, to say the least.

Look What the Tide Brought In

I’ve driven down South First hundreds of times and one of my favorite stops on the way home used to be the El Chile restaurant on the corner of SoFi and Mary. I always enjoyed a chelada and the chicken enchiladas with green sauce. But no more! Alas, out with the Mexican plates and in with coastal flair. Alcomar has burst onto the food scene with a very big splash and a wildly divergent menu form the former offerings.

I loved the place – albeit a tad too loud for my comfort. The food was great, the atmosphere festive and calming, the cocktails delicious and the service very agreeable. The Gulf Oysters were served ice cold with tasty sauces. The rest of my meal consisted of random appetizers; the snapper ceviche, I believe. I like a bit of heat in my ceviche and this was on the less spicy side, but it was very fresh and well presented.

Kudos to the team for another great place to join the family that includes; El Alma, El Chile, El Sapo and now Alcomar.
